In a significant step toward strengthening irrigation infrastructure and supporting farmers, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy officially inaugurated the Sadarmat Barrage at Ponkal village in Mamda Mandal of Nirmal district. The event was attended by Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao, marking an important milestone for the agricultural sector in the region.
Constructed across the Godavari River at an estimated cost of ₹650 crore, the Sadarmat Barrage has been designed to provide a reliable water supply for the Yasangi (Rabi) crop season. The project is expected to benefit nearly 18,000 acres of agricultural land. Of this, around 13,000 acres in Khanapur and Mamda areas of Nirmal district will receive direct irrigation support, while an additional 5,000 acres in neighboring Jagtial district will be served through the Ganganala canal system.
The barrage has been developed to supplement and stabilize the historic Sadarmat Anicut, an irrigation structure built during the Nizam era. By storing floodwaters locally, the new project reduces dependence on upstream releases from the Sriram Sagar Project, ensuring a more consistent and timely supply of water for farmers.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to agricultural development, irrigation expansion, and improved support for farmers. The project is expected to enhance crop productivity, improve water management, and contribute to the long-term economic growth of the region.
