A Sub-Inspector of Police posted at Mamada Police Station in Nirmal district was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe from a local resident. The arrest has drawn attention to the state’s continued efforts to curb corruption within public institutions.
The accused officer, identified as Theegala Ashok, allegedly demanded money from a local real estate agent in exchange for not pursuing a proposed cheating case against him. According to officials, the officer initially sought ₹40,000 but later agreed to accept ₹20,000 following negotiations.
Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached ACB authorities and provided details of the demand. Acting on the complaint, ACB officials planned a trap operation. The complainant was instructed to hand over chemically treated currency notes to the officer under official supervision.
During the operation, ACB personnel caught the Sub-Inspector allegedly accepting the money at his official quarters located near the police station. Chemical tests conducted on the recovered currency reportedly confirmed contact with the tainted notes.
Following the arrest, the officer was taken into custody and produced before the appropriate court. Officials stated that further investigations would examine whether similar complaints existed against the accused and whether additional individuals were involved.
The case serves as a reminder that public servants are accountable under anti-corruption laws and that citizens can report illegal demands through appropriate channels. Authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring transparency, integrity, and accountability in public service.
